Performing a Locus Search

Performing a Locus Search

Locus is DigitalStakeout's location based tool.  It uses XY data, primary data, inferred geography, and geographic place databases to display information.  The geographical data displayed in Locus is in real-time and historical in nature.  The data sources are displayed at the bottom left of the screen.

Navigate to the Locus application through one of the multiple paths in the product (home screen, hovering over "products", etc.)

The Locus initial display map uses your IP address as its source. You can go to and search anywhere in the world using Locus. There are several ways to search in Locus, as outlined below. As with the other tools, you may go back in time up to 30 days with Locus and view historical data.

Time Search
  • In the upper left hand side of the screen, there are the words "Date Range" with a drop-down box below the words.
  • Select the drop-down box and choose the appropriate time frame in which you want to search.
  • Click the blue "Run Search" button.
  • Results will be displayed on your map by date or time frame. As you move the map, you will see other results. Keep in mind, every time you move or zoom in or out the map will reload.

Search Bar Option
  • Once the map loads, you will see a search bar at the top of the page, just right of center.
  • Enter an address or name (i.e. Georgia State Capitol) in the bar.  The map will locate the point.
  • You do not need a numerical address for this bar, you can enter a landmark, monument, park, or other attraction worldwide.

Keyword Boolean Search
  • Once the map loads, the Keyword Boolean search box in located on the left hand side of the map.
  • Enter the keyword you are looking for, being mindful of the Boolean rules for searching
  • The results will be displayed on the map.
Screen Name Search
  • The Screen Name search box is located on the left hand side of the map, just below the Keyword search box.
  • Enter the screen name you wish to search for.  Omit all symbols (@, ., -, etc).
  • If the target using the screen name you search for has posted, tweeted, or shared using location services, inferred geo, or a geographical place name in the area your map is displaying, the results will be displayed.
Geo-fence Search
  • In the upper right-hand corner of the map, just to the left of the yellow person-shaped icon will be a small bar.  There is a circle in one box and a geometric shape in the box to the right of the circle.
  • Click on either one of these boxes, either the circle or the geometric shape, and you can set a fence around a central point or an address. This can be used in conjunction with the search bar. You can use your trackpad or mouse to adjust the size and shape of the fence.
  • If your target has posted, tweeted, or shared within the geo-fence, the results will be displayed.
Additional Information
  • In the upper left hand corner of the map, you will see a drop-down box with the word "Map" displayed. This can be toggled to "Satellite" view, and if the terrain box is checked, will display terrain as well.
  • The results will be displayed as markers on the map.  Just above the top center of the map is a black button with white letters that says "Collage."  Hitting this button will display your results as tiles instead of pins on the map.
  • Clicking the name or body of the post will take you out of DigitalStakeout and show you the post on it's native platform, for example, if a post is on Twitter, clicking on it will take you to Twitter to see it in its natural habitat, in a manner of speaking.
  • The Analytics button will show you the most prolific profiles and locations, and topics being discussed in your map view.
